Appropriating Picasso’s Guernica

Much has been written about the process and symbolism in Picasso’s ‘Guernica,’ considered by art historians to be the greatest work of protest art, with its complex imagery and hidden symbols.

In his large scale painting Picasso brought an unambiguous message of the indiscriminate aerial bombardment of a Spanish town by the Fascists, to the Paris Exposition of 1936.

These assemblage pieces incorporate his imagery, like the wailing woman, the hand and broken sword, the bull and the horse, with the intention to juxapose them to the issues of the day, like the Ukraine War, homelessness and more.
